assistant conductor and director of artistic planning

Daniel Ozment, Assistant Conductor and Director of Artistic Planning, serves as cover conductor, directs select non-subscription concerts, and prepares our vibrant group for selective performances with the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Mr. Ozment manages our rigorous audition process and facilitates the artistic planning and programming of our subscription season.

In March 2006, Mr. Ozment made his conducting debut with us in Spiritus! A Choral Celebration of the Spirit. Under his inspiring leadership, we performed with the Arlington Philharmonic in Remember & Honor: Five Years After September 11, a stirring concert presented by the Arlington County Public Library System in Virginia.

Performing as cover conductor since 2004, Mr. Ozment prepared us for performances of Beethoven’s Symphony #9, Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Play! A Video Game Symphony, and the world premieres of David Del Tredici’s Rip van Winkle and Jarod Tate’s Iholba with the National Symphony Orchestra under NSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin and Associate Conductor Emil de Cou.

Under Mr. Ozment’s leadership, we prepared an energizing presentation of A Tribute to Friendship for renowned composer, pianist, and conductor Marvin Hamlisch. Our inspiring performance benefited the Kuwait-America Foundation and the 35th annual Kennedy Center Gala. Mr. Ozment also instructed us in a joint venture with Chinese Soprano Song Zuying and the National Symphony Orchestra. Under the direction of Muhai Tang, Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, our powerful concert will be broadcast on CCTV (Chinese Television) and released internationally on DVD.

Mr. Ozment studied voice, percussion, and conducting at James Madison University, where he earned his B.M. in music education and M.M. in conducting. As a graduate assistant, he studied conducting with Kevin Fenton and Susan Reid and served as the Director of the James Madison University Chorus. He continued his education and training in master classes and workshops under Otto-Werner Mueller, Christoph Eschenbach, David Hoose, Christopher Zimmerman, Kenneth Woods, David Hayes, and Duain Wolfe. Mr. Ozment continues to inspire as a leader as well as a professional chorister with the Master Chorale.
