Considering the fact that inexperienced gamers face a higher dropout rate than expert players, it is essential to understand why and how some tutorial types are more or less successful. Hence, the aim of this study is to explore the effectiveness of different tutorial types in a mobile game.

To do this, a controlled experimental study was performed with the participation of 46 users who played a simple RPG game in two groups. One group was provided with a narrative in-game tutorial, while the other group received an implicit in-game tutorial. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of the experiment. The results revealed that the narrative tutorial was rated as more user-friendly and more helpful than the implicit in-game tutorial.
